HMONG: Coat (100% Upcycling plastic) Handwoven Textile
The DoiTung brand is a social enterprise by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, which was set up approximately 30 years ago by HRH Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother, to carry out economic and social development work for hill tribe communities using the Sustainable Alternative Livelihood Development (SALD) approach. Its flagship project, the Doi Tung Development Project, was initiated in 1987 to provide an alternative livelihood for the ethnic villagers of Doi Tung, Chiang Rai Province, who once relied on drug cultivation and trafficking to survive. The project has also helped reforest the hills and preserve the environment as well as the local cultural heritage. A participatory approach ensures that the villagers are involved in every step of the process, and creates empowerment that will lead to sustainability. Their innate skills and craftsmanship are identified to create product lines for the brand, such as textile weaving, ceramics and mulberry paper that are enhanced with creative design by using technological innovation and selected raw materials to produce high quality products based on the values of sustainability.
