Back to 1999, a boy got up and prepared to go to school. While he was taking shower, he noticed a green soap bar that his mother bought for using in the family. A few thoughts that popped up in his mind at that time were 1. The whole family including his parents, sister, grandmother and himself used the same soap, showing that the target group of this soap was very broad and covered all genders and ages. 2. Soap was an exhaustible product and consumers needed to buy it repeatedly. and 3. His mother’s soap in the bathroom was not advertised, meaning that if the soap was good, it would create word of mouth by itself. Due to these ideas, he decided to learn how to make soaps seriously. He turned his bedroom into a small soap laboratory. He began to do research from reading the books, talking to the experts, searching in the internet and doing experiments by mixing different herbs into his soaps. He continued doing it for over a year before getting the best soap for his mother who

gave him the inspiration. She used the soap and was very impressed with it. This was the story making Chatchai decide to start Phutawan business. After Chatchai was certain about his herbal soap’s quality, he started to think about branding. Initially, he had many names in his mind but none of them satisfed him. Until one day he traveled to Mae Hongson Province in the north of Thailand, he rode the motorcycle along the mountain and saw the golden ray of sunlight rising above the mountains. Such picturesque view in the morning empowered him with a good energy to start a new day and impressed him dearly. Therefore, he decided to name his brand by combining two words:”Phu(khao)”(mountains) and”Tawan”(the sun). As mountains signifes a stability and the sun signifes the great power of the nature, the meaning of “Phutawan”is the great power from the nature that stabilizes life and soul.
